The Manx Electric Railway

Another amazing relic from our somewhat more golden recent past,

the M.E.R. runs - as it has done since 1893 - from Douglas to Ramsey (with a detour from Laxey to the summit of Snaefell, should you wish to visit our majestic peak). Almost all of the rolling stock is original, whilst two of the trams which opened the line all those years ago - trams 1 & 2 - are still in operation and are the oldest of their type anywhere in the world.

The line rattles, jerks and scrapes, in a way that's actually pretty difficult to describe, along the very edge of the Island, offering amazing views over the Irish sea to the Fylde coast and Cumbria. It's by no means the quickest way to get to Laxey or Ramsey, but it is definitely one of the quirkiest.
